Chopped

While in my motion graphics class at Ex’Pression College, I was given the task of creating a show opener, lower thirds, transition, and a show bumper for any TV show. One of my favorite reality cooking shows is Chopped! So I thought that it would be super fun to work

I was not quite sure where to start, but I knew I wanted some real images of food. So I started by taking images of fruit and knives as something of a mood board.

Taking the photos gave me an idea for a story, and I started on some boards. I was thinking about a fruit explosion.

I made an animatic to get the general timing of the piece.

I then took a bunch of pictures of food on my kitchen floor. I look the photos into Lightroom and did some color corrections. Then I took them into Photoshop to give alpha channels. And finally I composited everything in After Effects. A lot of the inspiration came from the photo of the knife cutting into fruit. It helped guide my decisions in chopping the show logo, the lower third, and the jump cuts in the bumper.
